Junior Squash Pennant Registration Form and Tournaments

Body:

Pennant

Below is the registration form for Vikings juniors playing junior pennant.  Junior pennant fees will remain the same as last year at $135.  If you also play senior pennant there is a discount for senior pennant fees with a cost of $70 for junior players playing both seniors and juniors - that is a total of $205.  It would be appreciated if all players could complete a registration form and return via email or hardcopy at training.

The Competition Committee met yesterday to put the teams together.  I will send the team list and draw through in a separate email.

Amended Junior Tour Calendar

I previously advised that the NSW Country Championships were on 7 and 8 March but apparently this was an error on the Tour Calendar.

New Premier League

Last year saw Premier Division go down to 4 teams, so something had to be done. So we have sliced, diced and remade the format.

This pennant will see a Premier League based on four lines of players. The first line will be the top 6 players in Canberra, and the next two lines will be the next 12 best players. Line 4 will be the top six women players.

Each line will play a round robin format, so 5 weeks per round, 3 rounds make 15 games. We will end up with a Champion ACT player at the end of the League season!

Teams will be made of four players, based on Clubs as much as possible. Vikings has two players in the top line, Ray Payne and Aidan Parks.

Divisions 10 & 11

Div 10 and Div 11 will operate the same as last Pennant, where at the half way point the Division will be split into two, the top four teams playing each over and the bottom four teams playing each other.

The first round will be a rules/coaching night at Woden.

Vikings Junior Squash 2015 - Update

Body:
Happy New Year!

Hope you all had a relaxing Christmas and new year!  It is time to at least start thinking about junior squash for 2015.  The Junior Committee had its first meeting on the weekend so we can make an early start on planning for this year.

Training

Junior and women’s training will commence on Sunday 1 February.  At this stage, times will remain the same as last year: women 1pm for an hour, Snerts ( younger and beginner group) 2 to 3pm  and Kvaks (experienced players) 3 to 4pm.  Costs will also stay the same women $8 and juniors $5 for their respective session.  Knaks are of course welcome to come to the earlier session to assist the Coach and teenage girls are welcome to the women’s training.

President's Report from 2014 Annual General Meeting

This has been a challenging year for the Vikings Squash club.   Major challenges include attracting new members, adding value to our membership, working with Squash ACT to grow the sport, strengthening partnerships with sponsors and clubs, also exploring new avenues, trends and ideas. I wish to thank each Committee Member for their efforts during 2014.  They are: Nev Sheather, Competition Manager & Junior Committee; Bruce Cartland, Treasurer; Bryson Hawkins, Webmaster, Junior Committee; Kim Hawkins, Junior Committee; Karen Gauntlett, Junior Coordinator; Elizabeth Smit, Junior Committee; Shannon Paull, Committee; Helen Chant, Junior Committee.

I would like to give special thanks to both Bryson Hawkins and Kim Hawkins for their time and effort on the Junior Committee but who have both decided to retire due to new commitments.  Bryson has agreed to continue on with the Webmaster Duties and I am sure we will see Kim around the traps with children in tow.

Our tournaments, practices, teams and juniors all benefit greatly from Sponsorship.  A big thanks to our major sponsors who contribute to grow Vikings Squash in the Tuggeranong Valley and around Australia.

Vikings Group, Yowie Squash, Active Leisure Centre, Alucom

Communication:

Our website is awesome and we are glad to see our members using this valuable resource.  We have Facebook and Twitter accounts, so like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.  If you want to be involved we are always looking for new web content and web savvy officials to keep us in touch.  Feel free to email the webmaster, we are also looking for assistant webmasters.

Administration:

Behind the scenes there is a lot that must be done to operate our club and the more experience you gain as a Committee Member, the more you see this.  Remember that many hands make light work, if anyone wants to join the committee or help out in any way, drop any of the committee members a line or bail them up at practice.

In closing, I would like all Vikings members to know there are many other irons in the fire and ideas on the table that we will continue to pursue and communicate to you.  I welcome any suggestions and constructive feedback that would make our club even stronger - my email is president@vikingssquash.asn.au and mobile 0437 496 727.

Good Squashing and keep checking the websites for updates.

Inaugural Public Service Squash Challenge

Inaugural Public Service Challenge

Vikings Squash at the active Leisure Centre in Wanniassa, hosted the inaugural Public Service Squash Challenge on the weekend on 25-26 October 2014. Approximately 40 players entered the competition, including public servants from a broad range of departments and agencies.

Among the departments represented were the Departments of Social Security, Human Services, Environment, Health, Defence, Infrastructure, Taxation, Communications, the Attorney-General’s Department and agencies such as the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare and the Australian Electoral Commission.

The tournament definitions of ‘public servant’ were deliberately broad.  Consequently, it was a nice touch to see representatives from other organisations and professions that have a lot of dealings with the public service such as nurses, contractors, physiotherapists and academics. Even better, a number of offspring of public servants entered the competition, and they enjoyed themselves as much as their parents, if not more so!

The two day event had a number of highlights, first of all, the squash courts were looking fantastic. In the weeks leading up to the tournament, the courts were sanded and the walls were repaired and repainted. Each player played at least 3 matches, and many entrants took the opportunity to have a few friendly games as well.  Saturday night of the event was marked by a relaxing function at the local Erindale Vikings club, which had an impressive array of finger food and free drinks.  The organization of the tournament went smoothly, thanks to the experience and calm of Tournament Director Neville Sheather, his magnificent Committee, and the successful implementation of new online tournament software, hosted by SportyHQ.com.

As for the squash played, all standards were catered for and many memorable shots and rallies were played.  The matches were played in good spirit, with some outstanding squash played.

The Women’s A Grade was particularly memorable, with both players enjoying several match points at each end of a high tempo five game match, in front of a big crowd.  Eventually a tenacious Natalie Myvalt overcame a heroic Julie Medway.  Such was the tension of this see-sawing epic that all of those in the audience have very few unbitten fingernails remaining.  Shortly afterwards, the Twitterverse was set alight, with one tweet stating “squash players really are very competitive…or do they just really love their game?”

Other noteworthy squash highlights included the finesse of Aidan Parkes (a last minute injury replacement into the Challenge) beating a gallant Adam Gauntlett in the Men’s A final; the intense concentration of the Men’s B Grade winner, Bruce Cartland; a comeback win by Shannon Paull in the Men’s C Grade final; the pure gutsiness of the cool, calm and John Truong, winner of the Men’s D Grade; the never say die attitude of Ally Cusack, winner of the Women’s B Grade Final; and the remarkable athleticism of Nev Sheather beating Marshall Clarke in their great match.

There were great prizes from tournament sponsor Yowie Squash with lots of winner and runner-up prizes.  Engraved trophies have been subsequently made, and all this undeniably made all the on-court heroics worth the effort.  All who attended seemed determined to re-double their training efforts in the off season to ensure that their name is on next year’s trophy!

Dr Marshall Clark, organizing Committee Member

Thanks greatly to our major sponsors Vikings Group, Public Service News Online, Yowie Squash and Active Leisure Centre.

Thanks Henry weber and SportyHQ for their fabulous tournament software.

Also thanks the Vikings Junior Committee
